Frequently Asked Questions
Is this game really going to be free, what's the catch?
Yes, this game is really going to be free.   There is no catch, see we don't own a license to create this game, nor do we really want one.   This is a fan-based extension of the popular starship games.

There are advertisements on the website, will there be advertisements in the game clients?
Right now the answer is "No", however, if we find that we need to do that in order to continue to update the software we will consider it.

Will the client software install spyware?
Not only no, but HELL no.   I don't know about you, but I freakin' HATE spyware, we will NEVER include any with our free games or game installers.

What are the system requirements for the client application?
The client was originally being developed in C++ Builder, but we made the decision to move to .NET for several reasons.   So you will need a Windows-based computer with .NET framework v1.0 installed as well as Direct X 9.   You can get both of those from Microsoft.   Also, you will need Internet access.   The client software should work pretty good regardless of your Internet connection speed, so high-speed Internet is not required.

I have seen your client software for sale on other websites, why is that?
That is because evil people prey on others.   Our software is completely free, if you are asked to pay for it, tell them to remove it because you are telling the authorities, then come here and download it for FREE.

What does turn-based mean?
Turn-based means that you have to wait your turn to play.   Just like most board games, you take your turn, then the person to your left takes their turn, then the person to their left.   This continues until it is your turn again.   Since Starship Combat Simulator is turn-based, you do not have to remain connected to the server during another player's turn, however, if you do, you may chat with the other players and watch their moves.

What happened to the single-player game?
It was swallowed up by a black hole.   Actually, we made the decision to cancel it for now.   We might try to complete it after we go gold with the multi-player, but that is to be seen.   If someone wants to pick it up and develop it themselves, go right ahead.   We will help with whatever you need to make it happen.

I received an email asking me to verify my user name/password, is this legit?
Nope.   Someone is trying to scam you, we will NEVER ask you to verify your password, if you forget it, you can have it emailed to you, or you can request it to be reset.

I can't log in.
Did you activate your account?   When you signed up, you were sent an email to the email address you specified.   In it you received an activation code that you must use to activate your account.   If you have not received that email, please contact us, send us your User Name ONLY, DO NOT EMAIL US YOUR PASSWORD.

I want to use my own avatar, is this possible?
Yes, all you need to do is submit the avatar to Mark A. Malo, and we will determine if it is appropriate for mixed age groups, resize it if necessary, and then make it available for you.  The avatars you submit can be private to you or available to the community, please specify this when sending your avatar image to us.

How do I get my Clan listed on the Clan List?
You need to send an email to Mark A. Malo with the following information:
  • Your SCS Online UserName
  • The Name of your Clan
  • A description of your Clan
  • The URL of your Clan's website (if applicable)
  • Your clan's icon/avatar (if applicable)
We will add your Clan information to the Clan List within 48 hours.

I just started a clan and want clan members to be recoginable by a clan icon, is this possible?
Yes.   The clan icon will replace the players' avatars.   You need to submit the avatar to Mark A. Malo, tell us the name of your clan, and clan website URL (if applicable) and we will add your clan information into the clan database and make that avatar available to clan members.

I want to help with development of the game. What do I need to know?
The game code is open-source, and should be available for download here.   The main code is written in C#, so you should know C#, or in the very least, some .NET language.   The gameboard screen is displayed via managed DirectX 9, so you will need the DirectX 9 SDK.   If you are graphically or musically talented, then you can use the SCSModder to modify the images and skins.   The SCSModder application can be installed through the SCS Client Installer or separately.   All should be available here.
